The Traffic Sign

This traffic sign on Angel Hill at the bottom of Abbeygate Street is known as the "Pillar of Salt" and is listed as a Grade II monument.

It is a unique piece of street furniture designed in 1935 by Basil Oliver, Architect to the Bury St Edmunds Town Council.

Described architecturally as being of International Modern Style the pillar is constructed of concrete and steel.

Notice the lantern on top with projecting box-framed road sign in 3 directions
It stands on a plinth with steps and small octagonal piers in each corner.

Increased motor traffic made signing essential and its design was approved by the Ministry of Transport in June 1935 subject to the letters and road numbers being kept to a maximum height of 5 inches.
